Mikko Lagerstedt is a Finnish-based self-taught photographer with an interesting portfolio of photography projects that can be viewed in his Behance webpage and his own website. His “Dream” fine art photography project takes you into journey of lonely dreams and memories of fog and light. The dramatic usage of light and shadows in his work is remarking his work and converts his photos into unique experience. Lagerstadet’s projects, Dream I and II, is based on fine art photography and photo manipulation techniques to reflect different concepts and ideas in the composition. Unlike the commercial photography, fine art photography elaborate artistic vision for the photographer, which can be presented using different types of photography techniques such as night photography, long exposure photography, low key and high key photography, and more.
Fine art photography may involve photo manipulation and photo editing to emphasis on the concept presented in the photo composition, but many photographers still do not consider heavily-edited photos part of the photography art and business. They see it more related to visual art and digital composition. A side from this debate, Lagerstedt used his talent to visualize different concepts in his photographs presented in the “Dream” project.
Mikko Lagerstedt lives in Kerava, 30 km from Helsinki, which gave him access to nature scenes and amazing sceneries that provided great inspirations for his photos. He started his career as a photographer in 2008 with his first DSLR camera, Nikon D90. Currently, he uses Nikon D800 and Ricoh GR long with number of Nikon and Sigma lenses. He started to focus on atmospheric photos after the lose of his best friend when he was 20 years old, this experience affected all his future work.
Lagerstedt held solo fine art exhibitions in Finland including the Edge at Järvenpää-talo in 2014 and Atmosphere in 2014 and 2015. His photographs have been published by newspapers , books, and magazines including BBC, The Huffington Post, The Telegraph, Daily Mail, and Instagram. He has received a lot of awards including the Prix 2014, The International Loupe Awards 2013, International Photography Award 2013, and the Nikon Photo Awards 2010.
Below are examples of his project, Dream I, which involves intensive photo manipulation and editing to reflect the surreal concept behind each photo. Lagerstedt took these photos using Nikon D7000 DSLR camera. This part of the project has been published on 2011.
His second part of the project, Dream II, indicated more development in his talent and experience, less photo manipulation can be seen in the below photographs and more involvement of photography techniques such as high contrast photos, night photography, and others.
